What guns are illegal in Italy?
Assault weapons are not legal in Italy, nor are any fully automatic rifles or handguns. Noise suppressors, or silencers, are also illegal, along with any kind of military or police-grade weapons.
To legally purchase firearms in Italy, one must either obtain a "purchase authorization" (nulla osta all'acquisto), which allows the holder to purchase and own a firearm but not carry or use it.
52 ( self-defense) and Art. 55 ( culpable excess) of the Criminal Code provides that: The citizen is authorized to use “a legitimately possessed weapon or other suitable means” for the defense of “his own or others' safety”, or rather, of “his own goods or those of others”.
