People often wonder before they take up a combat sport like Boxing, Muay Thai or MMA, whether the skills they learn will actually be effective…

People often wonder before they take up a combat sport like Boxing, Muay Thai or MMA, whether the skills they learn will actually be effective in a street fight.. Boxing is one of the most effective forms of combat for a street fight, because, not only can you inflict a Knockout blow with a single strike but you can also end the conflict very quickly and get out of danger.. A high level boxer will have more striking ability with the hands than someone who is trained in MMA or kickboxing and with just one good punch, can end a street fight before it even starts.. Boxers can also take on multiple attackers effectively which you can’t do with other martial arts and punches are the way 99% of street fights are initiated.. If you are fighting against somebody with no experience of fighting in the street then boxing will get the job done every time.. Somebody who hasn’t been trained in fighting and doesn’t know how to keep their distance will get taken out every time by a boxers quick punches to the head.. You’ll also find that most people that get involved in fights on the street do not have any training because the guys who are skilled at fighting usually have better things to do.. Boxing is extremely useful in a street fight but Muay Thai is the king of stand-up fighting.. While a boxer might have some advantage early if they can land a quick punch and end the fight as they would usually have better punching, if the Muay Thai fighter gets a chance to set himself up, he will have a big advantage.. If the fight goes on a bit longer and the fighters develop some distance between them, the Muay Thai fighter will be able to use low Kicks and even knees and they will have the advantage over the boxer.. Boxers will have a lot better hands the most MMA guys and if you can end the fight early with punches this will heavily favour a boxer.. If you are working as a bouncer and you feel that you need to protect yourself at all times and you already have the boxing skills, you can always take up another ground game like Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling and this will give you complete confidence even if the fight goes to the ground that you can at least defend and maybe even get some submissions.. If you’re in boxing and you’ve been sparring then you know what it’s like to take a punch from a trained fighter to body and to the head, you’ve been there before and it’s not something that you’ll be afraid of unlike someone who’s never trained in fighting before.. That is also good experience you get from training in boxing, you will know much better when someone is about to throw on you and as we have said, you will know to keep that distance and counter any punches they throw effectively and with enough force to end it with a single blow.. Boxing is the most effective way to diffuse an aggressive situation but it doesn’t offer a complete arsenal of defensive and offensive maneuvers for anything that could happen in a fight and we are mainly referring to the ground game here.

Unique & powerful strength training and conditioning info for martial artists and fighters.

The Pros & Cons of MMA (& other combat sports) for Street Fighting -. The debate between martial artists who train purely for self defense and those who train for combat sports (like MMA, Muay Thai, and BJJ) about who's skillset carries over better to a true no-rules street fight has been going on for a long time.. Hell, it is not that uncommon for people from a more traditional martial art (who tend to claim they focus more on "self defense" aspects) and combat sport martial artists to literally come to blows over the debate by setting up challenge matches.. What I mean by that is, a MMA/Muay Thai/BJJ fighter could potentially survive a street fight, but they should be aware of the pit falls of their art(s) and should tweak their training approach when it comes to self defense.. This gives combat athletes a distinct advantage in a street fight because they are more experienced when it comes to dealing with real, full-contact violence.. Some MMA Techniques are Dangerous in a Street Fight - I don't mean that they're dangerous for your attacker, I mean that they could be potentially dangerous for you.. A Street Fight isn't a Duel - Let's face it: combat sports are essentially dueling.. When compared to what many traditional martial arts would have to do to realistically get their art ready for an actual street fight, the adjustment is quite small.. To be perfectly fair, traditional martial arts are nice anachronistic pastimes but they are in a much worse position than combat sports when it comes to preparing their practitioners for a street fight.. Perhaps if there's enough interest I'll write a post on what Traditional Martial Artists need to work on to prepare for a street fight...but that'll be a really long post.

It could seem a bit weird for a fighting style that mainly takes place on the ground to be helpful in street fight situations, so I will answer this question:

BJJ is often considered one of the most effective martial arts.. The techniques you can learn in BJJ are highly effective for taking down a single opponent, controlling them, and convincing them to give up through submission and chokeholds.. When compared with striking martial arts, a striker rarely has the ability and power to knock someone out in a street situation.. If you’re not making anyone submit yet in a BJJ sparring match, you’re getting submitted yourself and have to learn how to defend yourself to work your way into a winning position.. BJJ is one of those martial arts.. So when it comes to a street fight and a BJJ practitioner goes up against a regular fighter, maybe even a reasonably experienced Boxer, they only need to worry about taking the opponent down to the ground.. If a BJJ practitioner has mostly been focusing on learning in a Gi-wearing environment, then they could have challenges in applying their abilities in a street fight situation because almost no one wears any attire even close to a Gi.. This is what could make a BJJ practitioner less useful in a street situation if they are expecting to be able to apply their skills, which they learned on a Gi, to street clothing.. Jiu-Jitsu is only good for a street fight when there’s one opponent.. It’s key to remember that BJJ is a grappling martial art and that if you want to defend yourself on the streets it is a smart idea to have experience in one of the striking martial arts, too.. So does BJJ work in a street fight?

Photo by Fernando Frazão/Agência Brasil In Judo, good grappling skills you learn in Judo can often allow a smaller person to defeat a larger one…

In Judo, good grappling skills you learn in Judo can often allow a smaller person to defeat a larger one in a street fight, as solid groundwork will give distinct benefits to the user.. As such, Judo can work effectively in a street fight, but Judo has its limitations that you need to be aware of.. In this article, I will illustrate further where Judo works very well in a street fight and explore some of the downsides of using Judo in a street fight.. Although this practice can make judo very proficient for self-defense, there have been many suggestions that sport judo has essentially watered down the effectiveness of the art for this purpose.. While both arts are grappling focused, Judo is scored more heavily on standing and throwing an opponent, while BJJ tends to focus on newaza(Ground techniques). It is not unheard of for a BJJ blue belt to submit or control the fight with a judo black belt on the ground , however a judoka could essentially throw a BJJ practitioner to the ground and never follow up on the ground.. Arguably the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time, “The Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko was also a black belt in judo and competed in a great number of judo competitions before turning to MMA.

It is hard to find a mixed martial artist (MMA) who does not rely on the effective striking of Muay Thai also known as Thai…

Muay Thai is effective in the street because of the deadly techniques they use.. Fighters use the kick to attack the midsection, the leg, and the head of an opponent.. The strike is one of the impactful techniques of Muay Thai.. Clinching is not only effective in street fighting but also good for people who want to improve their Thai Boxing and MMA skills.. The elbow and knee strike alone make this art very powerful.

Unsanctioned street fighting is against the law. However, that does not mean you cannot protect yourself when attacked, we explain this topic in full detail.

Where necessaryMMA fighters like any other trained fighter are able to use the proportionate force required to defend themselves.. For example, a trained MMA fighter may be able to inflict severe damage on another person who is not trained in any way, even if they did not start the altercation.. Then again, the trained MMA fighter can use force equal to the imminent threat .. The trained martial artist who is versed in the art of Brazilin Jiu-jitsu get the attacker to the ground chokes them out .. Trained fighters can only fight on the streets when they or others are the victims of an attack or they are deemed to be in mortal danger .. A trained martial artist , like any other member of the public, is not allowed to participate in unsanctioned street fighting or even worse, participate in the attack of another member of the public.. One of the more well known and relevant was that of trained MMA fighter Phoenix Jones vs a member of the public.Phoenix Jones AKA Ben Fodor talks about legal street fights in Washington State.. But the key to using a trained martial art in any situation where you may be the victim is not to use excessive force.. You are a trained professional MMA fighter , out in a bar having a good time, when Mike, a rather drunk individual bumps into you spilling their drink all over his new expensive evening jacket.. Using your MMA training, you attack Mike seriously injuring him in the process , because he had threatened to hurt you .. Two of the highest-profile street fight incidents involving MMA fighters were that of lightweight Roger Huerta.. It is obvious from the above research piece that street fighting laws are the same for members of the public as they are for trained MMA fighters of any other trained martial artist.

I am sure you have always wondered the type of martial art that can be of help in real-life situations, most especially when it comes to street fights. People

Most of the time, people who attack others in a street fight are usually untrained individuals or drunk who know little or nothing about fighting techniques, this will be an advantage for a boxer being attacked to finish the fight quickly with a punch if possible.. However, if a boxer gets into a fight against a trained person, for instance, someone who has also been taught in the martial art, it could get a little tricky depending on how fast the boxer is to avoid being knocked to the ground because boxing does not teach how to fight on the ground.. A boxer will also have to take note of his distance when fighting someone good with his feet because it could be of disadvantage to him.. Another advantage of boxing in a street fight that is not possible with other martial arts is that a boxer can take on multiple attackers at a time.. Just one thing you need to know is that as long as a boxer can stay on his feet in a street fight, he will always have the advantage over all other people; bring a boxer down on the floor and he will be at the mercy of asking to save his life.. You will do yourself a great good if you can learn some boxing skills as a way of self-defense in any kind of tricky situation you find yourself.. Boxers combine defensive and attacking skills with effective footwork and distance control, this should be enough to beat an untrained person and the good thing is that you don’t have to be an expert before you can use it for self-defense.. There are several things a boxer needs to put into consideration when he is faced with danger in a street fight and it means if you are a boxer, you will need to ensure some of the things we will discuss below when you find yourself in such situations.. If you are deciding on which of the combat sports to take up based on learning self-defense against street fights or for real-life situations, boxing will help you in several ways.. Boxing helps your punches to develop better because street fights are usually about the punch before considering its wrestling part and then kicking.. You will be able to fight off more than one opponent at ones as long as you can knock them out with a punch.. Boxing helps you to have a fighter’s mentality, you will not get surprised with the shock, the pain involved with street fights because it is something you are already used to.. Boxers are not trained to fight on the ground and this could be a disadvantage because street fights might sometimes end on the ground and boxing skills will become useless at that point.. Boxing doesn’t teach you how to defend takedowns or leg kicks and this could be a major problem

If you’re into martial arts, then chances are you started training because of a need to defend yourself. The problem is, training martial arts in a gym is not the same as using that martial art in a street fight.

The problem is, training martial arts in a gym is not the same as using that martial art in a street fight.. There are no rules in real life like there are in an MMA match, so the question then is: What is he best martial art for street fighting?. There are a lot of martial arts that can be useful in a street fight, but Muay Thai, and Jiu-Jitsu are at the top of the list.. If you lose your balance in a street fight or your kick is caught, a fall on concrete has a very high chance of head injury, and is especially unforgiving in a real fight.. In the rest of the post I will explain why I chose Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu as the most useful in a street fight scenario, and I will also discuss the different factors at play that will influence how you fight.. I will also show some examples of martial arts used in street fights and statistics to help you determine what martial art you should use in a street fight.. Whether it’s because you get emotional, or you love fighting, never fight for nothing.. If this is not possible, then you can use a striking based martial art (such as boxing) to hurt your opponent and create a way to escape.. Before I get into the next section I must emphasize that you should never fight just to fight.. If your street fight only consists of one attacker, then your best bet will be a submission based martial art such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.. But in a street fight, you will most likely be fighting on concrete.. The majority of people you face in a street fight will be untrained, and their go to martial art will be boxing.. Even in MMA fights, where eye-gouging is illegal, fights have ended due to accidental eye pokes.. Many street fights end with quick knockouts, and this is usually due to one person being in fight mode while the other hasn’t realized how far the argument has escalated.. In conclusion, you should use a combination of boxing, muay thai, and jiu jitsu when in a street fight, as well as elements from krav maga.

The rise in popularity of MMA and Jiu-Jitsu has increased public awareness of martial arts and created a current wave of martial arts enthusiasts. However, an unfortunate side effect of this popular martial arts movement is that the average person sees tournaments such as the UFC and thinks that self defense works like the fights that occur in the ring or octagon. Nothing could be further from the truth.

By real street self defense I am referring to situations where there is no ring, no referees, no friends around to help you and to stop the situation before it gets to far out of control and no one to stop the attacker from beating you to death after you have been knocked down half unconscious.. Also, in real street situations attacks happen without warning or provocation.. A ring/cage/octagon fighter may train some awareness skills but not the kind that is designed to help you recognize potential attackers in real life because in the ring it is very obvious who you are fighting, where they are before the fight begins and that they are there to fight you.. Obviously this is quite different from a real street attack.. In street/bar fights there are MMA and Jiu-jitsu stylists who have been stomped, gutted and shot because they made the mistake of confusing ring rules and sports with real street situations.. In MMA and Jiu-jitsu sports training the critical part of practice is to work within a set of rules to pin or knockout the other person who is empty handed and fighting by themselves and whose only defense is that they have been training MMA, boxing and Jiu-jitsu so that they can have a match with / against another competitor.. On our website we have a video that we made of a student defending himself against a surprise attack by multiple attackers armed with baseball bats.. The saving grace of this is that we have students who have defended themselves against serious multiple attackers and in other real situations who have reported to us that our training methods made the difference to them in surviving and escaping from the situation(s).. If you are an MMA, Jiu-jitsu guy maybe challenging them to a fight with rules at the local gym is a good response but it is still not the proper self defense response.

For the past 20 years, I've been fortunate to pick the brains of renowned martial artists and street fighters, many of whom I wrote about in the pages of Black Belt. One of the most impressive people I've met is an Englishman named John Skillen. His real-world skills and exploits are the stuff of le...

When avoidance isn't possible, Skillen recommends verbal de-escalation.. Skillen says all other targets, particularly on the body, are worthless in most situations.. In terms of offense, John Skillen says the hands are king.. Alternative tools: The ex-doorman also thinks highly of uppercuts and overhand punches but in a more limited capacity than straights and hook punches.. In most standing situations, forget elbow strikes, he says.. "Overrated for pre-emptive self-defense," John Skillen says.
