Is there a minimum word count for EE?
Overview of EE Requirements
The EE must meet all the general assessment and subject specific criteria outlined by IB. Length & Format- All EEs should be between 3500 and 4000 words in length, they should not exceed 4000 words.
Word Count
The EE is a maximum of 4,000 words, so a good target for the first draft would be 2,000 words.
It's important to understand that 4,000 is the maximum number of words you can write in an EE, not the exact target. That means you can write an EE that's 2,500 words long and do just fine. However, for clarity and comprehensiveness's safe, we do suggest that you make your essay at least 3,500 words long.
Your EE word count should only be made up of your essay's body text. Here's a quick guide to what you can exclude from your word count: 1. Titles/subheadings/table of contents – all this stuff is not included, these are structural components.
The extended essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal academic style, appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn. The upper limit is 4,000 words for all extended essays.
The Research Question maybe stated as a hypothesis rather than a question. The EE is presented as a formal piece of scholarship containing no more than 4,000 words. The upper limit of 4,000 words for all extended essays is rigid.
A student who fails to submit an extended essay will not be awarded a diploma. The EE is an essay, not a report or a descriptive or narrative essay. It must have a HYPOTHESIS (or point of view) that is effectively argued or defended.
Writing 2,000 words will take about 50 minutes for the average writer typing on a keyboard and 1.7 hours for handwriting. However, if the content needs to include in-depth research, links, citations, or graphics such as for a blog article or high school essay, the length can grow to 6.7 hours.
Assignment length requirements are usually given in terms of numbers of words. Unless the lecturer tells you that these limits are strict, it is normally acceptable to be 10% above or below this word limit (so, for example, a 2000 word assignment should be between 1800 and 2200 words).
Penalty deducted from intellectual mark
For example, if the word limit is 1500 words and you submit an essay of 1560 words (which is within 100 words excess) your mark will be reduced by 5 marks. Thus, if the essay achieves an intellectual mark of 65, your final mark will be 60.
How long does it take to write 4000 words?
Writing 4,000 words will take about 1.7 hours for the average writer typing on a keyboard and 3.3 hours for handwriting. However, if the content needs to include in-depth research, links, citations, or graphics such as for a blog article or high school essay, the length can grow to 13.3 hours.
All Extended Essays should include the three components of a research paper: (1) the introduction, (2) the body or development, and (3) the conclusion. The Extended Essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal style appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn.

Caution on Using Footnotes and Endnotes
Footnotes and endnotes may be used for referencing purposes and if this is the case will not be included in the word count of the essay. If information is contained in a footnote or endnote and is not a reference, this must be included in the word count.
Generally speaking, the word count will include the following: All titles or headings that form part of the actual text. All words that form the essay (the main body of text). All words forming the titles for figures, tables and boxes, are included but this does not include boxes or tables or figures themselves.
Such visual material should be clearly captioned; the captions do not count towards the overall word count.
The extended essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal academic style, appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn. The use of word processors is encouraged. The upper limit is 4,000 words for all extended essays.
Economics seems to be the one where scoring a seven is very easy. It has the highest number of people scoring 7s.
Annotated Bibliography for the Extended Essay

How much time should it take? The extended essay is intended to take approximately 40 hours from start to finish.

How difficult is it to get an A in the extended essay??? I think about 10-15% of EEs get As. If you stick to the rubric and do your due diligence on reflections, you set yourself up pretty well for success.
But what happens if you fail an Extended Essay? You won't get an IB diploma if you get an E in both the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. Students who fail to submit their EE don't earn the diploma. You also can't earn the diploma if you get an N in any of the subjects in the Extended Essay.
If you fail to submit a TOK essay, or fail to give a TOK presentation, you are given N for TOK. Failing condition*: An E in either TOK or the EE is a failing condition. However, provided that your total diploma score is 26 or more, you can carry one failing condition and still be awarded the diploma.
If you came here for the number alone, the answer I come to a bit later is about one peer-reviewed reference for every 200 words of essay body, based on the body being 75% of the word count.
